"Callidus Guild’s couture wall coverings are just that – they’re like fashion for walls. Their bespoke application of ancient materials and use of rich, sumptuous layering expands the possibilities of modern wallcoverings, lending major glamour to small and large spaces alike.  Perhaps equally as important is that Callidus Guild’s creative team is a true pleasure.  They listen, collaborate, interpret and tweak, if necessary, and are committed to their clients’ satisfaction from the beginning to the end of the design process."  - Kara Mann, Kara Mann Design

ABOUT YOLANDE MILAN BATTEAU

Yolande Milan Batteau is an independently exhibited fine artist who brings decades of artistic materials and methods investigation to the hand crafted, fine art quality walls, panels and wallpapers she designs and fabricates as CALLIDUS GUILD. Batteau’s surfaces involve pushing marble dust, encaustic, resin, leaf and micaceous powders beyond their historical limits. These materials are approached with processes of adding and taking away, tooling, burnishing and several secret techniques she has invented and refined over the last twenty years. Batteau oversees two studios with teams of artisans who specialize in gilding, plasterwork and painted finishes. Yolande directs a Brooklyn based atelier, maintaining vital dynamic relationships throughout the International creative community, and a design space for clients to visit and develop projects.

Yolande’s life long curiosity in material culture has informed the appearance of her small and large-scale representational paintings. Questing to map her intuition of an “essential self”, Batteau is fascinated by natural phenomena and the sorrow precipitated by attachment and illusion. Having travelled to over 50 countries, Batteau has a strong affinity for a wide range of cultures and their arts, including African, Asian and European. Many of the techniques she uses in her canvases end up as wallpaper patterns. “During my many travels, I was fascinated by the details of the carved coral plaster in Lamu, or tadlakt in Morocco. I gathered formulas and techniques of dying local arts from Japan to Belgium and incorporated them into our art for  architecture.

“To do truly visionary work,” Yolande is convinced, “you must approach these familiar materials with new processes.” Batteau’s work has appeared in magazines such as Vogue, Architectural Digest, Residences, Metropolis, Surface, Art News, Veranda, Interior Design, Art Forum, Elle Decor and The New York Times.
“Callidus Guild’s work is designed to create an experience, a visceral reaction of excitement or awe or quietude. One of the Chanel brothers called it  “chaud”, I think of our surfaces as just beautiful. “ Some of the Callidus Guild list of clients are Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior,  Hotel Edition, Tiffany, Graff, Gucci, Jean Louis Deniot, Joan Behnke, Bill Sofield, David Collins, Peter Marino, and Axel Vervoordt.

Callidus Guild’s wallpaper interprets their signature architectural finishes onto hand-painted wallpapers. Custom color can be matched to a paint chip or fabric sample. Using only the finest historical materials, Callidus Guild’s plaster, lacquer, and precious metal wallpapers are easily mounted.
